Trifecta :: An Intensive Workshop
with Doug Dyment

As a special favour to fellow PEA member Martin Duffy, Doug Dyment has agreed to present an unprecedented Intensive Workshop as an extra event prior to the 2011 South Tyneside International Magic Convention, on Thursday 10 March at 19:30. Doug has never before lectured outside the PEA about his techniques, so this represents a worldwide “first”. The workshop will focus on six specific topics. Three have previously seen light in Doug’s highly lauded private publications, though this workshop will feature aspects of their methodologies that have been withheld from publication, and never previously divulged.

The fourth topic will be a detailed exploration of Perfectly Square, Doug’s personal method for the magic square. This is a new, never before revealed technique for constructing squares “for real” (i.e., with no gimmicks, cribs, advance preparation, partially-memorized squares, or anything other than the mind of the performer). Unlike other methods for magic squares (which have been known to fill small books with their complexity), this revolutionary approach requires no memorization of numbers and no difficult arithmetic (if you can divide an even number by two, you can do this). It works for any target number (including dates, etc.), and produces true magic squares that add to the target total in a minimum of 28 different ways, with no repeated values [except for targets less than 34, where such repetition is unavoidable] or numbers that look out of place. Multiple squares can be created with no duplications, even for identical target numbers, making this technique ideal for walk-around and trade show performances.

The fifth scheduled subject will be a new, improved, and highly practical methodology for incorporating magic square ideas into the delivery of psychic/character readings.

The final topic will offer an innovative approach to the classic "diary" effect. In this essentially hands-off (and — excepting the need for a diary — impromptu) version, an ungimmicked/borrowed pack of cards is shuffled by a participant, and a written prediction placed in clear view. Subsequently, without ever touching the pack, the prediction, or the diary, the entertainer asks for the pack to be cut anywhere, uses the value of the cut-to card to specify a month, and then a pair of cards to specify a day. The card written by that date in the diary is read, and the participant ascertains that no other date in that month shows the same card. Finally, the (legitimate, unswitched) prediction is seen to state the exact card.

This (approximately) four-hour workshop is open to all serious, intelligent students. As unpublished material will be divulged, attendees will be required to sign a standard nondisclosure agreement. Please bring a regular pack of playing cards and a writing implement. More than eighty-five pages of previously unpublished lecture notes are included in the £80 workshop fee.
